Parkrun
What is Parkrun?
Why would getting involved be good for my health?
Come and join us on Saturday 8th July at 9am when the staff at Brunel Medical Practice are volunteering and taking part in the Torbay Parkrun to celebrate the 75th birthday of the NHS.
It’s not all about running!!!
Anyone can take part either cheering, marshalling, walking, jogging, running, pushing pushchair guiding a partially sighted runner etc.
It is a free community event that takes place every Saturday in 2000 locations across 22 countries.
The closest one to Torquay is a 5km flat course at Paignton velodrome. A group of volunteers walk behind the participants to ensure no one comes last.
Get involved with friends and family or come and make new friends. Challenge yourself in the memory of a loved one or raise money for charity. Wanting to get fitter, lift your mood or sleep better. There are many reasons to just come along to see what it’s all about.
The health benefits are plentiful.
Social connection and volunteering to help others reach their personal goals can have positive effects on our health. The pandemic showed how damaging social isolation can be to our mental health.
Parkrun can help with mental health just through the community connection it creates and being outdoors in nature with other like minded people.
It’s not all about running!
Don’t be put off and think it’s not for you.
Just more movement, like steady walking has been shown to benefit our immune systems, reduce muscle loss as we grow older, keep our heart and lungs healthy and improve sleep and mental health.
Combine this with a personal challenge, getting involved with other people’s inspiring stories of overcoming adversity and loss and being part of a weekly community all have great effects for your health.
It is no wonder that The Royal college of GPs have partnered with Parkrun.
There is no pill that has all of these benefits.
Come along and see for yourself and join the Brunel staff who will be walking cheering and some running. Combine this with a personal challenge, getting involved with other people’s inspiring stories of overcoming adversity and loss and being part of a weekly community all have great effects for your health.
